About FanCode

FanCode is one of the leading sports destinations that provides sports fans with a highly personalised experience across content and commerce. Founded by Yannick Colaco and Prasana Krishnan in March 2019, FanCode boasts over 100 million users.

The platform has partnered with a series of domestic and international sports leagues and has many associations across multiple sports. In terms of content, FanCode allows people to live stream sports with industry-first subscription formats such as Match, Bundle, and Tour Passes. People can also buy monthly and annual subscriptions at the most affordable prices.

The Problem Statement

In March 2024, FanCode Shop - the merchandise arm of FanCode - experienced a significant surge in orders due to the onset of the Indian Premier League and the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup. While it served as a positive sign for the company, such an unusual spike also raised some eyebrows within the FanCode Shop team. With high scepticism, the team started checking orders for their authenticity.

FanCode Shop discovered fake orders being placed by fraudulent individuals and bots on its website. These fraudsters employed malicious tactics, such as using the same phone number for multiple orders, adding fictitious addresses, or providing gibberish details to place deceptive orders. This not only kept FanCode Shop’s inventory stuck in logistics but spiked its return-to-origin (RTO) rate and impacted the brand’s profits. FanCode needed an urgent solution to address and prevent further damage.

Solution: The Solution

To combat this rising concern, GoKwik stepped in and leveraged its intelligent online fraud detection model backed by technologies like artificial intelligence and machine learning. The model smartly studied the brand’s incoming orders and utilised a series of rules to find orders which,

  • Were placed by high-risk shoppers
  • Had gibberish addresses and names
  • Had Invalid pin codes and addresses with lengths less than 20 characters

The model also identified shoppers with a higher-than-usual order velocity which further enabled GoKwik to study/block these shoppers and prevent the rising number of RTO orders.

To add another layer of security and mitigate risks, GoKwik actively deployed a series of interventions on FanCode's site. Key measures included:

  • OTP Verification for COD Orders: This intervention helped eliminate shoppers with low buying intent and impulsive buying behaviour. It ensured that only genuine customers ended up placing COD orders.
  • COD Prompt and COD Captcha: Additional interventions such as COD Prompt and COD Captcha further secured the checkout process. These measures required customers to complete one more verification step, which helped prevent bots and scripts from placing fraud orders.

These interventions collectively helped FanCode improve the overall integrity of its order fulfilment process and preserve the brand’s bottom line.

The Result

The implementation of GoKwik's solutions yielded impressive results for FanCode:

  • Reduction In COD RTO Percentage: FanCode reduced its COD RTO percentage by approximately 56%.
  • Detection of Fake Orders: GoKwik's fraud detection solution successfully identified and blocked fake orders.
