In March 2024, FanCode Shop - the merchandise arm of FanCode - experienced a significant surge in orders due to the onset of the Indian Premier League and the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup. While it served as a positive sign for the company, such an unusual spike also raised some eyebrows within the FanCode Shop team. With high scepticism, the team started checking orders for their authenticity.
FanCode Shop discovered fake orders being placed by fraudulent individuals and bots on its website. These fraudsters employed malicious tactics, such as using the same phone number for multiple orders, adding fictitious addresses, or providing gibberish details to place deceptive orders. This not only kept FanCode Shop’s inventory stuck in logistics but spiked its return-to-origin (RTO) rate and impacted the brand’s profits. FanCode needed an urgent solution to address and prevent further damage.
